Intermezzo! – REGISTRATION DEADLINE EXTENDED!

February 23, 2016 By Diane Slone

Summer Send-Off Camp for all Instrsz_caroline_2015_3rumentalists!

We are excited to announce that from 14-23 August, 2016, Intermezzo! will bring together cello, piano, viola and violin students from KSMA and HKSMI, along with the faculties of both schools, and guest teachers from around the world.

Renowned Guest Faculty

In addition to the highly regarded faculties of both KSMA and HKSMI, we are excited to welcome guest artist faculty:

Caroline Fraser is returning for a second summer to work with KSMA piano students.   In addition, Miss Caroline is now authorised through the Asia Regional Suzuki Association to offer teacher training in our region.  We are thrilled that she is able to stay long enough to offer Unit 1 piano training for pianists who are interested in beginning their journey to becoming Suzuki Piano teachers!

Although this may be the first opportunity for most of our students to meet him in person, many of our cello students will already have “met” Richard Mooney through his books such as Position Pieces for Cello. We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Rick to Hong Kong to work with our cello students, as well as to offer Unit 1 cello teacher training.

Also a welcome and familiar face to students at both KSMA and HKSMI, Mark Mutter will be coming to work with our violin and viola students.   In addition, Mr. Mark will teach both our foundation unit  Where Love is Deep – open to all parents, teacher trainees, and other interested people – as well as teaching the Unit 1 training course to violinists and violists who would like to become Suzuki teachers.

A Variety of Classes

Over 5 days,  students will have a daily instrument-specific group class, as well as a class in Dalcroze Eurythmics.  In addition, depending upon age and level appropriateness, students may also participate in fiddling, note reading, musicianship, chamber music, orchestra and other classes.

Masterclasses, where 4 (Book 1), 3 (Books 2-4) or 2 (Books 5 & above) students and their parents come together for individual instruction,  are available on a first-come, first-served basis.  Students registering for masterclasses will be grouped with the same student/parent teams for a one hour session on two separate days during the camp.

Highly Motivating

Intermezzo! will be a highly motivating way to end the summer and jump start families’ enthusiasm for the new school year!   Students and parents will enjoy spending time together, learning, making music, and having fun!

Parents may register to attend Where Love is Deep and for a special parent seminar, as well as attending classes with their children.

Student  Classes  Tuesday, 16 – Saturday, 20 August

On Tuesday through Friday, student classes will be be scheduled beginning after lunch.    Masterclasses for students who have not yet gone back to school will be scheduled in the early afternoon;  group classes for all students, and masterclasses for students who have returned to school, will be scheduled in the late afternoon and evening.

rsz_caroline_2015_1   Teacher Training Opportunities

In addition to the student workshop, we will be offering Teacher Training for individuals who are interested in learning how to be Suzuki teachers.   The required introductory class, Where Love is Deep (WLID), is open to all interested adults, not just instrumentalists wanting to pursue teacher training in Suzuki Talent Education.     We will offer Unit 1 training in cello, piano and violin for qualified musicians.

Training Dates:

  • Where Love is Deep                      Sunday, 14 August
  • Cello and Violin Unit 1                 Monday, 15 August – Monday, 22 August
  • Piano Unit 1                                   Wednesday, 17 August – Tuesday, 23 August

There are still spaces available for students.   Register today to get in on the fun!

Applications and auditions for cello, piano and violin Unit 1 training are required by the Interim Asia Region Suzuki Organization to be processed by 14 July.   Audition videos cannot be accepted after 1 July, 2016 in order to allow for processing.

T-SHIRT DESIGN CONTEST!

February 17, 2016 By Diane Slone

Screen Shot 2016-02-17 at 3.28.27 PM

We have many opportunities for our students to perform outside of KSMA at various public venues.   Like many other musical and other types of organizations, we think that it would be wonderful if our students and their families could be easily identified.

In the future, when our families go to perform in public – whether for a walkathon, Oxfam, or some other type of group performance, we will all wear our KSMA t-shirts as our “uniform”.

What t-shirts?   Well, we are going to have a student design contest.   Students have from now until March 1 to submit their designs for the front of our t-shirts.   The winner will be announced when the t-shirts are ready, hopefully just in time for Bach in the Subway!

Please give your completed entry to Ms. Lan.   Make sure that your name is clearly written on the back of the design.

Good luck!

Oxfam Musical Marathon

We are excited that once again KSMA student families will have the opportunity to participate in the Oxfam Musical Marathon.  Through many different types of endeavours, Oxfam works to eradicate poverty worldwide.   It is so exciting that our students can have the opportunity to  use their music to directly make an important positive difference in the lives of others!

In order to participate, each student is responsible for raising a minimum of $400, which will go directly toward Oxfam‘s relief efforts.   Funds will be raised during the month of March, to be turned into to Ms. Lan no later than April 1.

Our requested date/time for playing at the marathon is Sunday, April 17, 12:00-2:00 (we will play for approximately one hour).

Service for others was one of Dr. Suzuki’s most strongly held beliefs.   How wonderful for us that we can use our music in this way!

2016 started off in an exciting way for everyone at KSMA.   Our New Year’s Concert showcased the work that each team of students had been doing in their fall term group classes.   How wonderful to see that teamwork in action!   More than one parent said Pachelbel Canon, the concert’s Grand Finale, was so beautiful it brought them to tears.   Congratulations to all of the students, parents and teachers for all of their work that resulted in this celebration of the New Year.
