Bach in the Subway

March 28, 2019 By Suzuki Music Academy of Hong Kong

This year’s Bach in the Subway performance was a huge success!

On Saturday, 23 March, over 80 students from KSMA, along with friends from HKSMI and 11 teachers (!) joined together at the Stanley Amphitheatre to celebrate the 334th anniversary of the birth of JS Bach. There were more than 130 students and teachers performing together!

Most of the repertoire performed was pieces composed by JS Bach. The only exception was Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. The Twinkle Variations served as the music for our entrance and exit parades; even then, Bach was present because he led the parade! We also played Happy Birthday to Bach, just before the ending parade.

Students have been very excited to comment about the experience.

“I really loved the parade”

“I thought the dance was the most fun”

“It was really disappointing that we didn’t get to play the Bach Double”

While we were sad that the Amphitheatre’s busy schedule made it so that our performance had to be cut short, we were thrilled with the huge audience, and relieved that we were able to end the parade back inside of Murray House without rain damage to any of the instruments.

*If any parents have great video from a parade, please share it with Ms. Lan. The international Bach in the Subways organisation would love to have it!

We’re already planning for next year’s Bach in the Subway celebration! #BachforthePeople

Reflection from the Performer: Emma To ~ Pre-Mozart Recital

March 22, 2019 By Suzuki Music Academy of Hong Kong

by Emma To

I feel that I did well on my Pre-Mozart recital, but I could have been better. On Romanian Folk Dances, I could have done a better job with the tone and technique in the sixth movement and the first movement. Also, in Sovenir de Sarasate, I could have done a better job at memorizing the piece. I made mistakes in the part before the left hand plucking, and I forgot and panicked, then I made a mistake. Most of the mistakes I made were because I panicked and made a mistake in the fingering, or bowing. Next time, I should memorize my part well and try to also memorise my fingerings.

Chinese New Year Group Class Concert

February 27, 2019 By Suzuki Music Academy of Hong Kong

Our Chinese New Year Group Class Concert was a huge success! Parents, guests, and teachers all commented on how beautiful the students’ sound was, from the youngest performers to the most advanced. One guest, who had never attended a concert of children playing before, commented that “I never imagined that children could have such stage presence and sound this good! I am so happy I was able to attend!”.

Congratulations to all of the students, and their parents!

Please enjoy these photos from the event.

MusiCares Goes to the Dogs

Title: SAI KUNG STRAY FRIENDS WRITE-UP
The journey to Sai Kung Stray Friends was a memorable one.
On that day, the weather was quite chilly and the air felt a bit frosty, I would say. But the festive mood, lights, food, and decorations of the Sai Kung Stray Friends campsite (or headquarters) brightened the day up, so although we still had to play with cold and stiff fingers, which was obviously not that ideal, but it was still an experience that I enjoyed and didn’t regret.
The staffs, volunteers, and guests there were extremely friendly and vibrant! They helped us introduce ourselves, applauded when we finished, and generously offered to refill our stomachs, enjoy/relax, and have an immersive experience with the Stray Friends community with their wide variety of festive foods and games. All this encouragement gave me the energy to do my best! They made us feel like a part of their community, a part of them.

Though it was cold, it was fun playing for the people (and they clapped!) The hot dogs and samosas were nice. (Vera)

I liked the food, the cupcakes tasted really good. (MaryChun)

It was a great experience going to perform music at Sai Kung Stray Friends. Since it was my second year in a row going there, I found out more about their community. It was also pretty cold on the day of the performance and the food the volunteers cooked was very nice.(Gareth)

The dogs were cute, the people were nice, we had fun. (Amarbir)

It was a fun and interesting experience and the dogs were really cute (Oliver)

In my opinion, it was great experience. I got very happy to play for a charity and got lunch at the same time. Even thought therewwere times I thought we were ignored, we still got some applause, so it was still good (Roger)

It was a bit cold, but it was fun playing in Sai Kung. The food was nice and the dogs were funny. (Marcus)

The burger and the potato salad was bomb! (Bryan)

Altogether, SKSF raised over $26,000 to go toward supporting the dogs in their care.  Congratulations, MusiCares for your contributions!

Stanley Christmas Market Performance

December 11, 2018 By Diane Slone

The rain stayed away, and the temperatures were mild for our annual performance at the Stanley Christmas Market.  There was a great crowd, and appreciative audience for our students as they shared Christmas music with visitors to the market, as well as with our own families.

The Market is such a fun way to welcome the holiday season!

Please enjoy some photos of the event
